Sports Authority started out as a sporting goods store in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. Funded by a group of venture capitalists, the first store opened in November 1987. Kmart was successful enough that in 1995, Kmart spun off the Sports Authority into its own company with 126 stores in 26 states. On August 4, 2003 it was merged with Gart’s Sports, another large sport retailer. The resulting merger gave the Sports Authority chain 205 stores in 33 states. All former stores owned by Gart’s were rebranded as Sport Authority stores.
The company’s stores carry almost everything you need to be active and get off that couch. While some items are seasonal, such as sleds, many sports supplies such as golf are carried the year around. Besides equipment, they also carry team uniforms, and is a great place to pick up uniform accessories for that league you have been meaning to join. These stores are large enough to carry what you need, but you won’t need a GPS to locate exit.
Sports Authority continues today as a leading sports retailer in the country. In addition to top brands, the stores also carry and support their own brands, giving its customers more choice and economical pricing on many items. Sports Authority brands include Alpine Design outdoor supplies and clothes, Sims snow equipment, Aspire women’s wear, SA Gear fitness equipment, Parkside outdoor games and Body Fit workout equipment.
